"Once upon a time there was a piece of wood."
– Chapter Ten, Pinocchio, Cottage Stories
Carlo Collodi’s novel, first published serially in 1881, was a Tuscan tale of human development on Pinocchio’s journey from mischievous puppet to a real boy. Far more than a simple character in an old Italian story, Pinocchio is now a complicated symbol continuing to inspire new generations. In a world of artificial intelligence and digital misinformation, Collodi’s timeless story of awakening from naivety and the importance personal responsibility is more relevant than ever. Learning to listen to your conscience in a modern noisy society is increasingly hard, and this little puppet embodies the importance of being an authentic human.
